The low end is still an important segment, if you can achieve one thing, which is MASS SALES. You have smaller margins, but multiplied by millions, can still result in good profit figures.

This is why Samsung is facing a lot of pressure at the moment. With iPhone finally releasing a large screen phone, it has in essence obliterated Samsung's high end profits (They just announced a 74% decline in profits due to decline in Galaxy sales), so the low end market now becomes more important to Samsung to retain their profitability.

GSM Arena, what are you trying to say by this statement:
"Samsung reportedly thinks that these three devices are equal in terms of specs to Chinese smartphones which cost around $475, but that's quite exaggerated."

How can 3 devices be equal in specs? Obviously, there's some hierarchy, right?
        And what is being exaggerated?

Samsung just reported a whopping 74% decline in profits people. Whatever they're doing, defend if you want, it's not working. They better think of something soon.

I wonder besides myself how many commenters are actually in China? Xiaomi is only capturing the low-end for the most part despite their higher specs. Go into any low income environment such as a garment factory floor or a school and you will see Xiaomi phones. Go into any middle to high income environment and all the Xiaomi phones practically disappear.

Seriously? Xiaomi will tear Samsung apart - A series will probably have "low end" hardware, while any recent Xiaomi offering will be 3+ times faster at a lower price. Samsung expects chinesse to buy Samsung because its a brand product? Xiaomi already dominates the market (in China) with their high-spec low-price products, what chances low-spec high-price products have? Somewhere around zero.

If Samsung think cheap price is the only reason Xiaomi is eating its market share then it and in the media still have no clues! My wife had Samsung Note 3 and I used Samsung Tab 2 as phone for years but after I got hold a Redmi S1 just to find out what's all the fuss about it, both me and my wife found it so much easier to use than the Samsung or LG Android phones we have used and I brought another Redmi Note. Unless Samsung wise up, I can see it will continue to loose market shre.

If they put S4 specs into a Alpha body and sold it for $2399 RMB ($400 USD) complete with support for 4G they'd have something that could compete with Xiaomi/Meizu here in the mainland.

Samsung has much more brand value/desire, so they don't need to match Xiaomi's/Meizu's race-to-the-bottom price/performance offering, they just need to get close.

Samsung have got Improve there Support for there phones before they can think that they are like Apple,an any phone they release will become succesful,Why?are they always the Slowest with Updates for there phones really get there phone buyers not so happy, and the Sales Target not so Good because of this,Metal might good for phones but Samsung have got to think of the Price Upgrade of there Phones,an might lose buyers because of this instead of gaining buyers

Of track: of all the galaxy s devices galaxy s5 will be remebered for being least adored one.
Thw market response was nothing near satisfactory and Samsung itself do not care for it now.

Samsung had been shaken to it roots this year. 2014 will go down in the history books as the year of beggining of samsungs doom.
Only saviour for sammy this year was note4 but by overpricing it samsung has shot itself in the foot.
It will be interesting to see how samsung retaliates to the chinese attack.

Although I never owned a (smart)phone one other than samsung in my life but I was deeply hurt when samsung dispalced Nokia to become no.1 in mobile business.
But frankly speaking samsung has been playing fairly for all these years and whatever it earned was because of its hardwork. It has never bullied other manufactures or utilised its top position to affect the competetion. It has been a worthy top ranker.
But in next 2 years we will see a new no.1..most probably a chinese OEM.

Yes, it is a very nice ROM and a very nice concept (specially for those who love iOS) packed with new features that you don't see in other Androids, but it still has a long way to go in terms of quality assurance and that odd bug that happens to pop-out out of nowhere (and completely ruin your experience).

Redmi 1S suffered from pretty bad issues until recently, all software related. So no, Sammy can (and DOES) beat Xiaomi in software -- even if there is promise of a much brighter future for Xiaomi.

Not only samsung will gong to kill by xiaomi. All popular brand including chinese brand will fall from xiaomi. One solution to stop xiaomi, make your flagship same price as xiaomi.
As long as xiaomi maintained there price, there will be a big changes on popular brand about prices.
