I get bored when seeing Snapdragon doing little improvement. Maybe other competitors like nVidia and intel should keep making their own SoC which you know, they made very fast SoC.

I agree, that the QSD 835 has enough performance for all tasks performed on Android, and has good battery life for all users. That's not the point. The point is to keep pushing the envelope so we get better connectivity, richer graphics, longer battery life, and fast performance. And remember a lower frequency chip can be faster than a higher one. And a new chipset can be made significantly more power efficient, just by software, by undervolting the system (no need for hardware modifications!!).

Yes, Apple is leading the market. The A11-Bionic makes a joke out of the QSD 855+, so we're not too sure how well the QSD 865 will do. Especially against the A12-Bionic and the phenomenal A13-Bionic. Qualcomm is doing a lazy job of competing, as they are taking Standard Cortex designs and optimising them slightly... unlike Samsung and Apple which are taking the license to create a new core-architecture (costs more, potentially leading to greater performance and lower power draw).

To be fair, most of the advances in battery life will no longer come from the display or the processor... it will come from Battery Technology. With the billions of dollars annually going to that sector in universities, we should realistically expect a x3 to x5 increase in energy density in the next 7 to 14 years for Automotive (these are much more conservative than Elon Musk's predictions). For phones, I think it will be more optimistic, perhaps a x2 increase in the next 3 years. So we might see 8,000mAh batteries in as little as 2022 in slim/flagship phones. Though by this time, I think foldable tablets (transforming phones?) will become mainstream.

What would I do with all that power??
Firstly, I would undervolt the system, so that I can have 1 Week battery life.
Secondly, when I want to, I will overclock the system and dock the phone to become a Desktop PC / TV Console / Lapdock. It will have the performance to emulate almost anything from the Atari, Mame, Sega, SNES, GBA, N64, DS, DOS, PS1, Dreamcast, PSP to the likes of the PS2, 3DS, GameCube, Wii, PS Vita, WiiU, and Switch. Not much progress happening for Xbox emulators, and the PS3 and PS4 emulators require too much complex (x86) performance.

not only this is a lame upgrade , its also coming from company (Qualcomm) that can't be trusted after the heat problem they got from the heating snapdragon 810 incident .

Kingslayer, 12 Nov 2019I still want the near 3-year-old Snapdragon 835 for $230 that the Sharp AQUOS V will offer. I ... moreNew chips also have the latest bluetooth, wifi, LTE, cache, ram.

All the rage now is wifi 6, 5G, ddr5, bigger cache size.

So maybe those are things you may consider other then speed. But then again, if you are on a budget, it make sense to go 835, since its expensive to adopt wifi 6 / 5g now.

Of course still not as fast as the Apple A13.
But as Samsung Exynos processors are rumored to have significant improvements, maybe Exynos will beat SD on 2020. The upgrade is too minor.

Nick, 11 Nov 2019Incremental 855. Qualcomm is not even trying to get the fight to Apple. Why Qualcomm needs to compete with Apple? If they were developing SoCs for the same platform, you may be right. Unfortunately, that's not the case. Qualcomm competes with Mediatek, Samsung and HiSilicon, not with Apple.

I really don't see much of difference between a Snapdragon 820/821 vs 835 vs 845. A Snapdragon 835 with Pie out of the box would be perfect for me. I don't need the extra power beyond the 835. At least not for another 2-3 years. I want more mid-rangers to have a Snapdragon 835 with a sub-$250 price.
